How do you know which image is 'real'?
Every real image in our game is a genuine photograph sourced from professional platforms like Unsplash or our private archives. We perform reverse image searches and metadata verification to ensure the origin and authenticity of every photograph before it enters a puzzle.
What AI models are used to create the fakes?
Our fakes are made with Google's Nano Banana image models (Gemini) - currently Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro, while older puzzles used the original Nano Banana. Once you've answered, the results show which model made that puzzle's fakes - and how an AI detector did when it tried the same puzzle using only the six images.
Is it still possible for a human to tell the difference?
Yes, though the 'gap' is narrowing. AI still struggles with complex logic—like the way light reflects in a mirror vs. a window, or how hair interacts with the texture of a knitted sweater. Our 'Learn' section provides a detailed breakdown of these high-level detection strategies.
Why should I care about AI image detection?
As synthetic media becomes more common, the risk of digital misinformation increases. Developing the skills to spot AI-generated content is a form of digital literacy that helps you critically evaluate the news and media you consume every day.
What is the 'Uncanny Valley'?
The Uncanny Valley is a psychological phenomenon where a digital creation looks almost human, but is slightly 'off' in a way that causes a feeling of unease. In ImageGuesser, spotting this 'uncanny' feeling is often your first clue that an image is synthetic.
Can AI detection tools be trusted?
Automated AI detectors are helpful but not perfect. They often have high 'false positive' rates. We believe the best detector is a combination of human intuition and technical knowledge of how these models are built.
How do you handle data privacy?
We take privacy seriously. We do not track individual users' browsing habits or sell data to third-party advertisers. We use anonymous game statistics to improve our educational content and understand general trends in human perception of AI.
Is this game free to play?
Yes, the daily mission and the entire archive are free. We use non-intrusive, labeled advertisements to cover the high costs of AI generation and server maintenance.
How do I turn off daily reminder notifications?
Use the Notifications section at the bottom of this page and choose 'Turn off reminder' - the reminder is deleted from our servers straight away. If you'd just rather not be asked, pick 'Not now' on the reminder offer and it stays away for 10 days. Blocking notifications for imageguesser.com in your browser or phone settings also stops them.
How can I report a bug or suggest a feature?
